Marijuana, Pregnancy and Family Functioning

Registration information coming soon!

With the legalization of medical and recreational marijuana, rates of use during pregnancy have steadily increased.  At the same time, public health messages have failed to communicate the possible negative effects of marijuana on pregnancy and child outcome.  This session will describe the action of marijuana on the developing fetal brain, its impact on maternal and infant mortality and morbidity, implications of a male’s use of marijuana on child outcome, and implications of prenatal marijuana exposure on the child’s neurodevelopment and will raise the question of family functioning when marijuana continues to be used as the child grows and matures.

At the completion of this session the participant will be able to:

  1. Discuss the impact of prenatal marijuana use on pregnancy outcome.

  2. Describe the impact of prenatal marijuana exposure on the developing fetal brain.

  3. Explain the potential effects of a male’s marijuana use on child outcome.

  4. Describe the implications of prenatal marijuana exposure on the child’s long-term development and learning.
